This path was opened in the cliffs in the 17th century under the reign of Louis XIV, and was used to bring down trees (beech and fir) from the Pacq forest to the arsenals of the Royal Navy. When sexually mature, she leaves the hive on a fair windless day and mates with about a dozen males to fill her spermatheca. Mating results in death for the drones.
