Lichens and gypsum macrocrystals from the Sorbas Karst in Andalusia. The Sorbas gypsum karst is unique in Europe. The aridity of the region, close to the Tabernas desert, means that layers of gypsum, carved out by erosion into karst like limestone, remain on the surface. This gypsum was formed when the Mediterranean dried up during the Messinian crisis in the Miocene (-6 Ma), leaving behind huge evaporite deposits.

Cynomorium scarlet, (Cynomorium coccineum ) in the Tabernas desert (Andalusia - Spain). Parasitic species of tamarix, salsola and limonium, appearing only at flowering as a dense spike inflorescence. An ancient Miocene sedimentary basin (- 8Ma) at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. The arid climate of the Tabernas makes it Europe's only desert, expanding as a result of the increasing drought in southern Spain. In the foreground, lichens of the Diploschistes genus cover the clay soil.
