A farewell from those who are leaving to those who are staying. The winterers have just spent 13 months at Concordia, and it's time for them to go home. Their departure from the station is a heartbreaker for everyone. Note: this photo was taken during the 2020-2021 summer campaign, the first summer campaign to be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The overwinterers who are about to return to mainland France have not yet really been confronted with the reality of this pandemic: they have only heard about it through their families and the media. Two technicians finish digging a trench in the snow with shovels, in front of an outdoor electrical box. In summer, a team of around 25 technicians from various trades carry out various maintenance tasks at the resort. This includes the electrical distribution network, which is put to the test by the cold and temperature variations, and whose needs, particularly for scientific installations, are constantly increasing. Manual labor on Concordia is particularly demanding, obviously because of the cold, but also because of the lack of oxygen. Concordia Antarctic Research Station, Dome C plateau, East Antarctica.

3 technicians in front of the first photovoltaic panel on Concordia's solar farm. Electricity consumption rises sharply during the summer months, when the resort's activity peaks. It's also when the sun shines brightest. Tests are carried out to verify the long-term resistance of the panels to cold, and the behavior of the inverters, cables and electrical network.
