Royal fern (Osmunda regalis). Fertile fronds covered with sporangia - Osmunda regalis lives on poor, fairly acidic soils, such as sandy, clayey and peaty environments. These environments must be characterized by high humidity. In temperate Europe, it is generally found under the canopy of swampy woods (marshes or peat bogs), or under alders and willows on the banks of streams or ditches. It is often found in association with alder, notably in the Alnion glutinosae or Osmundo-Alnion plant associations - a large fern common in Galicia, and cosmopolitan.
