Achatine invasive snail Mare Island New Caledonia ; Tuber rotten death of a foot yam in a traditional Kanak fields on the island of Mare. Invasive snail (the akatina) has devoured all the leaves, causing the death of the plant. The issue of invasive species is particularly important in isolated tribes whose livelihood is mainly from staple food crops such as yam, cassava, taro, or sweet potato. This is the case of the tribe limit on the island of Mare, or wild pigs and akatina (snail introduced and invasive) attack the tubers for the first, rampage plantations and devoured the crops, and addressing the leaves for the second, sometimes leading to death of the plant. Beyond food problems begetting by the damage, some traditional practices that relate to these productions to see as IMPACTED (case of exchanges at weddings for example). In order to control the population of pigs, it is planning to set up a "premium jaw" to the manner of what is on the mainland with the Rusa deer.
