A free diver exercises dynamic apnoea below an iced platform, in the chilly salt water of the White Sea, at minus 2 degrees Celsius. Must be extremely prepared, brave and self-controlled to free-dive, holding the breath, in ambient without a fast and clear access to the surface. Reaching the underwater world, is an adventure itself since a thick layer of ice bars the passages every night, due to very low temperatures, and every day one must cut ice holes (called mainas by locals) into the ice platform. Salted water needs very low temperature to freeze. Below the ice platform, the upper layer is a melt of fresh and salt water, allowing a surprising amount of life to thrive. Location: White Sea, northern Russia.

'Octopus Training', At the end of a session of free diving, I noticed a soccer ball, in the distance and on the surface. Intrigued I approached it, and then I noticed that below it was an octopus that was being pulled along by the current. I do not know what it was doing under the ball, but I think it is training for the next football World Cup! There was time for me to take a couple of shots before the octopus let go of the ball and dropped back to the seabed.

'Last Dawn, Last Gasp'. This winter, I went diving with some local fishermen. At 6 in the morning I was already in the water, as the nets were raised at first light. During the dive I followed the path of the fishing nets from the bottom to the surface. As the fishermen quickly hauled on the nets, I tried to take some shots of trapped fish still suffering in the mesh, such as this tuna ().

Free diver is swimming over a pod of Sleeping sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) Researchers first saw this unusual sleep behavior in sperm whales in 2008. The scientists in that study found that sperm whales dozed in this upright drifting posture for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time, Vulnerable (IUCN). The sperm whale is the largest of the toothed whales. Sperm whales are known to dive as deep as 1,000 meters in search of squid to eat. Dominica, Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean. Photo taken under permit n°RP 16-02/32 FIS-5.
