It is a fruticose species, forming large, bushy, whitish mats on siliceous soils composed of sand, stones and rocks, and is rarely lignicolous. It thrives in humid conditions, in open, well-lit forests, but not in direct sunlight. From collinean (warm variant) to subalpine. France
