Frozen ground at Concordia, cirrus clouds overhead, technician walking on snow, cable tray. A technician walks from the ‘summer camp’ towards the two towers. The summer camp was built in the 1990s to enable EPICA drilling. Since the station was built, it has been used as a dormitory in summer (approx. 40 beds). The power lines linking the various buildings are raised above the ground, laid in cable trays supported by electricity poles. Vehicle tyre tracks can be seen in the snow. Concordia Antarctic Research Station, Dome C plateau, East Antarctica.

The two towers of the Concordia station, with the French, Italian and European flags flying in the wind, under a blue sky veiled with cirrus clouds aligned in the direction of the wind. The two towers are linked by a tunnel. They are permanently heated to 20°C by the diesel engine that generates the station's electricity. The left tower is the "quiet tower", housing the hospital, bedrooms (34 beds) and offices. The right tower is the "noisy tower": it houses a small workshop, the emergency generator, the waste room, the technical office, the video room, the living room, the kitchens and the refectory. The two towers are about ten meters apart to prevent the risk of fire spreading. Fire is an Antarctic expeditionary's worst nightmare; the French have a very bad experience of it. Concordia Antarctic Research Station, Dome C plateau, East Antarctica.

Uniform glacial/lunar landscape made up of blown snow forming sastrugis and a milky blue sky. View from a window in the station. The Dôme C plateau rises to 3,233 metres above sea level. These 3,200 metres are made up of snow and ice: by drilling, we obtain ice cores that have trapped air bubbles from the time when the ice formed. This makes it possible to study the atmosphere and climate of the last million years. The surface of Dome C is flat, made up of snow, with no cracks or living organisms. On average, 10cm of snow falls there every year. The wind blows at a maximum of 70km/h, with temperatures ranging from -14°C in summer to -93°C in winter. Because of its altitude and proximity to the South Pole, the air here is as thin as it is at 4,000 metres in our latitudes. Concordia Antarctic Research Station, Dome C plateau, East Antarctica.
