Kumbh Mela 2025: The Sacred Goes Viral. A Sea of Devotion. The Grand Spectacle of the Maha Kumbh Mela. Stretching as far as the eye can see, the Maha Kumbh Mela transforms the landscape into a vast expanse of faith. Millions of pilgrims, ascetics, and travelers converge on the sacred banks of the Ganges, creating a temporary megacity of devotion. Boats fill the river, tents line the shores, and makeshift settlements emerge to accommodate the world's largest spiritual gathering. The scale of the event is a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition, turning this sacred confluence into a breathtaking human phenomenon.

A technician welds stainless steel containers in the boiler room, the name given to the metalworking workshop. It's not uncommon to have to repair or make bespoke items, as Concordia's remote location makes the supply chain for spare parts difficult and time-consuming. A mechanic maintains the Caterpillar loader in one of Concordia's two garages. This Caterpillar loader is the only vehicle capable of operating during the winter period, as its tracks are made of metal, not polymer; plastic tracks crack under such temperatures. This loader is mainly used to supply the station with drinking water: every week, the mechanic removes a few buckets of snow which he then deposits in the melter, a kind of large tank heated by the residual heat from the power station's engine. Concordia Antarctic Research Station, Dome C plateau, East Antarctica.

Technician on a snowmobile/skidoo travelling between the station and a line of containers in thick fog. Quite a strong white-out. During such an event, staff outings are reduced to a strict minimum as the risk of becoming disorientated is at its highest, with visibility reduced to just a few metres. Only the technicians managing the emergency can travel by snowmobile. Concordia Antarctic Research Station, Dome C plateau, East Antarctica.

The expeditionaries bound for Cap Prud'Homme and Dumont d'Urville, in front of the Basler that will take them there. It's worth noting that some of them are wearing the blue garment normally worn for Concordia: this is because it's warmer and contains more down, which is no luxury at the start of the summer season.
