Fossil ripple marks, fossil turbidity ripple marks from Rocky Mountain Belt Supergroup, northwestern Montana, USA. Age is pre-Cambrian, 600 million years to 1 billion years. Environment of deposition was a shallow muddy shoreline, subject to frequent water level fluctuation and high sedimentation rate, resulting in rapid, deep and successive episodes of burial. Examination of ripple marks at any lake or ocean reveals they are actually moving as they form, thus to find this level of preservation is uncommon.Turbidity ripple marks result from sediment being pushed back an forth as the ripple forms at the shoreline, as opposed to current ripples, which indicate water flow in one direction.
