Baobab (Adansonia sp). This specimen whose trunk has a hole (so that one or more people can enter) is considered a "sacred tree" and is used during festivities and rituals. Gambia. Gambian culture holds it in high esteem, considering it a symbol of fertility, protection and resistance. They refer to the Baobab as “The Tree of Life” due to its ability to provide sustenance and resources in various forms. Many parts of the tree are used for practical and medicinal purposes.
