Excavation in black schist slabs characteristic of the Cardboard Schist formation. In geology, a formation is the proper name of a layer. The Schiste Cardboard formation owes its name to the flow of the shale in plate, relatively flexible, like cardboard boards. Lower Toarcian age (180 million years). The black color of the rock is due to its richness in organic matter (between 5 and 10% by mass). Where this rock has been buried and heated to a sufficient temperature at depth, the solid organic matter has liquefied to form petroleum. In Lorraine, Cardboard Schists have never been buried deep enough to generate oil. Lorraine, France.- Blouet brothers collection
