746/5000 3 automatic identification and weighing systems (mass tracker), each consisting of 2 identification antennas (direction of passage of the penguin) and 3 weighing trays (repetition of the measurement) allow the automatic tracking of the comings and goings of penguins of the colony. This long-term monitoring system has been operational since 2009. Ornithologists take the opportunity to measure and weigh the chicks, as well as to take a feather sample and a blood test. In recent years mortality has been particularly high among Adélie penguins because the pack ice does not break up in summer, which requires adults to travel very long at sea to feed their chicks left ashore. Many chicks do not survive.
