Hundreds of thousands of marine animals (fish, reptiles, birds and mammals) die every year in abandoned fishing gear in the ocean; cables, ghost nets, fishing lines, etc. Some of them die of drowning, others of hunger, because they are unable to feed themselves and others suffer from infected wounds. It is difficult for animals to defend themselves against these modern dangers for which evolution has not had time to prepare them.
