For over a century, there has been a special relationship between Dalmatian Pelicans and the fishermen who reside on Lake Kerkini. In winter, when these birds would usually leave due to a lack of food, the fishermen capture food specifically for them to keep them around as this reduces the number of Cormorants on the lake. Unfortunately this can lead to some of the coastal areas looking quite littered and unpleasant, however these ropes help to hold the nets needed to catch their food.
