Pair of schistosomes in a scanning electron microscope ; The female is fitted in the male.
The schistosome is a parasite of the human circulatory system.
Eggs for this species are evacuated in the stools and release a miracidium in presence of water. The miracidium finds a mollusc host where it becomes a sporocyst, producing more sporocysts which will then produce cercariae. The cercariae then break out of the mollusc and enter their human host through the skin. They get carried to the liver where they become adults.
