Robert Valarcher is a photographer specialising in mountain fauna and high altitude natural environments. His work is based on a documentary approach centred on the rigorous observation of species and their interactions with the environment. His images are intended for scientific, editorial and institutional use.
Active for several decades, he has photographed the biodiversity of the Mercantour massif, the French Alps and certain boreal areas of North America, notably Alaska. He endeavours to depict species in their true ecological context: chamois, ibex, mouflon, deer, moose, brown bear, but also more discreet species such as the fox or the pika.
His approach is based on a mastery of field conditions: prior spotting, discreet stalking, knowledge of seasonal and behavioural cycles. He favours natural light, winter or autumnal atmospheres, and a precise composition that highlights both the subject and its biotope.
Robert Valarcher helps to document the effects of altitude, extreme climatic conditions and certain human pressures on animal populations. His photographs have a strong documentary value, useful for scientific mediation, specialised publications and interpretation in protected environments.
