Okapia is a German photo agency specialising in nature, wildlife, science and medicine. Founded in Frankfurt in 1954 by Michael and Bernhard Grzimek, pioneers in wildlife documentary filmmaking, it emerged from the conservation movement that arose around the first major films on African wildlife, such as "Serengeti darf nicht sterben" (Serengeti Must Not Die), which won an Oscar in 1960. From the outset, Okapia developed a documentary approach to nature photography, combining scientific rigour with visual quality.
Over the decades, the agency has built up a unique photographic collection, bringing together rare images of natural environments and wild species photographed in their habitat. This collection covers a wide range of topics: mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, plants, as well as subjects related to ecology, biomedical research and public health. The collection is based on consistent production by photographers specialising in the natural sciences.
Recognised for its rigour and historical roots, Okapia caters to professionals in publishing, research, popular science and conservation. Its collection is a reliable resource for illustrating the diversity of life and environmental issues, with visual content suitable for educational, scientific or museum use.
