John Cancalosi is an American naturalist photographer and zoologist, renowned for his captivating images of the world's wildlife and his commitment to conservation. With a degree in zoology, he worked as a field biologist before devoting himself fully to photography. His career has taken him to explore various continents, including Australia, South Africa, Spain and the United States, with a particular interest in reptiles and desert ecosystems.
His photographs have been published in prestigious magazines such as National Geographic Explorer, BBC Wildlife and Newsweek, and he has won several awards, including Wildlife Photographer of the Year. His work goes beyond mere aesthetics: he seeks to raise public awareness of environmental issues, as demonstrated by his striking series on a stork trapped in a plastic bag, which helped raise awareness of the dangers of plastic waste.
Cancalosi also explores the relationship between geology, minerals and human civilisation through artistic works composed of salvaged metal objects, known as “metal mandalas”. Based near Washington D.C., he shares his passion with his son Nick, adding a family and personal dimension to his photographic work.
