Gabriel Barathieu is a French photographer specialising in underwater photography and natural landscapes, with a particular interest in tropical island environments. Born in 1983, he grew up partly on Reunion Island, where he developed an early affinity for the marine environment. His photographic practice was structured around the rediscovery of diving and the visual exploration of underwater ecosystems, before expanding to the island's terrestrial landscapes, particularly active volcanic zones.
After moving to Mayotte, Gabriel Barathieu continued his photographic fieldwork, focusing on coral reefs, marine megafauna and the island's geological relief. He uses professional equipment adapted to the technical conditions of underwater photography (deep dives, macro, wide angle), paying particular attention to the biological and morphological legibility of the species captured. He also produces images of terrestrial landscapes in contexts of dynamic light and geological activity, such as lava flows or karst formations.
His work is regularly published in specialist and general-interest media, and has won awards in several international nature photography competitions. These images have a dual purpose: to document marine biodiversity in areas of high ecological value, and to offer a structured and aesthetic interpretation of natural environments.
