Christopher Swann, a British photographer, explores and immortalises cetaceans through his expeditions and his commitment to the oceans.
Christopher Swann is a British photographer renowned for his striking shots of cetaceans - whales, dolphins and orcas - often in black and white. His photo Smooth Swimmer, showing a pilot whale emerging from the surface of a mirror sea, was a finalist in the 2016 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
A trained diver (Royal Navy, diving instructor and diver for an oil company) and whale-watching guide, he has led expeditions to Scotland, the Canaries, the Pacific, the Arctic and California. He has taken part in numerous film shoots for BBC and National Geographic documentaries. His marine background naturally led him to photography: his series The Curious Calf (young grey whale) was highly commended at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2018.
Christopher Swann alternates between the north-east Atlantic (Scotland) and the west coast of the Bay of California (Baja California), where he lives and works the rest of the year. He now devotes all his time to photographing marine life, dividing his time between expeditions, exhibitions and books. His work, imbued with experience at sea and a strong graphic eye, aims to convey the beauty and fragility of cetaceans, inviting contemplation and preservation.
